Powderhorn

Arts Orbit Weekly: 1/8/09

This week’s picks

Thursday, January 8
“If you ain’t seen Cadillac Records yet,” writes Dwight Hobbes, “I don’t know what you waitin’ on.” It’s still playing at the Regal Cinemas in Brooklyn Center; catch the 7:05 screening and you can still make the Radio On show at the Turf Club.

Friday, January 9
Friday night’s all right for fighting! First, Skirmish at The Loft as Dobby Gibson releases his new book of poetry. Then, after you’ve had enough of that prissy literary shit, it’s time for some cage fighting in Maplewood! (Yes, there are still some ten-person balcony couches available—$600. Ringside chairs are $50, BYO plastic tarp.) MORE »

Weekend What's What 1/8-1/11: Hunt and gather

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we’ll be using throughout January, if not February). MORE »

This week’s picks

Thursday, January 1
Swing by your local video store to rent a copy of Wall-E, the animated film that’s shaping up to be the surprise critical favorite of 2008.

Friday, January 2
“While some bands find Rock ‘N’ Roll after taking the most circuitous path possible,” writes Jon Behm, “Nightinghales take a straight path from A to B minor.” Catch them tonight at the 331 Club, where Dwight Hobbes praises the courteous barstaff—who don’t “saunter over with a kiss-my-grits disposition like they’re doing you a favor to let you spend your bread.” MORE »

Las Posadas at Midtown Global Market

Feel like swinging at a tall piñata to relieve some holiday stress? Well you’re out of luck, because the five-feet-tall and five-feet-long piñata that will be hanging at the Midtown Global Market all day on Saturday is just for show. Not to worry — there will be smaller piñatas available for children to swat at for the Posada de la Hispanidad, now in its third year. MORE »

THEATER | In the Heart of the Beast announces temporary closing even as it celebrates "La Natividad"

Giant puppets and dancing children could steal anybody’s show. They didn’t have to steal a show or a scene during La Natividad, because this show belonged to them, and to all of the actors and to us in the audience, too. Like In the Heart of the Beast’s MayDay parades, La Natividad is part of the community it has taken place in these past three years. As much as its Christmas story belongs to the ages, La Natividad belongs to today and here and now, rooted in Minneapolis and in the experience of immigrants and carpenters and angels and babies and mothers. Bikers will "Take Back the Greenway" with ride on Dec. 13

The Minneapolis Police Department’s (MPD) Third Precinct has issued an alert regarding a series of robberies/assaults taking place on the Midtown Greenway bike trail and the adjacent Hiawatha light-rail transit (LRT) trail. MORE »

Arts Orbit Weekly: 12/11/08

This week’s picks

Thursday, December 11
Brilliant violinist Leila Josefowicz is in town to play with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and they’re taking her to some kind of sketchy juke joint down on Johnny Cake Ridge Road. Sounds like a party…if not, there’s always the Ill 3 release party at the Entry.

Friday, December 12
Dragonforce are bringing their “Ultra Beatdown Tour” to Myth tonight, but if you really want to see an ultra beatdown, you want to see Dolemite, the picture the New York Times called “the Citizen Kane of kung fu pimping movies.” The film, which stars the late great Rudy Ray Moore, is screening at 11:30 p.m. at the Riverview. Weekend What's What 12/11-12/14: Party is as party does

It seems the Twin Cities are trying to jam in as much excitement as humanly possible before the hard freeze, and they’re doing a pretty good job of it! This weekend enjoy a nice balance of incredibly hip art shows, smokin’ live music, dance parties, and all night secret location soirees of the most extravagant variety. Bundle up and make the most of it—the snow is here to stay! MORE »

News you can use

Choose your school

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child.
