Barack Obama

Through my daughters’ eyes: "Why are you crying, mommy?"

by Rachel Dykoski • 11/14/08 • My daughters sat on my lap as the Obamas took the stage to thousands cheering in Grant Park.

Most people think my dogged passion for democracy, warts and all for the past ten months was ego-tripping. Myself included. I was eight months pregnant with my first child when Bush v. Gore took place. Heck, I walked through a snowstorm, uphill and down again to vote in 2000. I listened to the news 24/7 while I nested and made meals for the freezer, though I knew we wouldn’t eat them.

Muy Fabuloso

by Daniel Cubias • 11/16/08 • Let me give you a warning. If you should ever walk down the street of a major American city with my wife, you should not (by her own admission) listen to her she asks the innocuous question, “What’s over there?” I speak from experience.

Now what happens? Latinos and Obama, post-election

by Daniel Cubias, 11/11/8 • Can he transform “diversity,” Cinderella style, into a beautiful princess, instead of leaving it to toil in the social conservatives’ kitchen?

Here at Fanatic worldwide headquarters, we all want to know what the Obama administration will mean to Latinos.

No recounts are necessary

by Daniel Cubias • 11/11/08 • The dancing in the streets has subsided since Tuesday. Of course, I remain stunned that we had dancing in the streets at all. Seriously, does anyone remember this kind of orgiastic response over election results? Before this, the standard imagery was supporters in ballrooms laughing and waving signs, but now we see impromptu parades and ecstatic outbursts on street corners and strangers hugging each other in every city in the world.

Election eve in Europe

Three months before I attended my daughter’s wonderful Sept. 11 wedding at a 16th-century chateau castle in southern France, I subscribed to the online English journal Expatica, which caters to Americans who work and live in that country. MORE »

Republican former Governor Arne Carlson endorses Obama

“Instead of offering a national vision for our nation, Senator McCain has resorted to smear tactics in an effort to scare voters and stir up the right-wing base,” said Republican former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson on October 23, in a surprise endorsement issued at the State Capitol. “Senator Obama has been a remarkably disciplined and focused leader who will become a truly great president. There is no doubt that Senator Barack Obama is the right choice for president in these challenging times.” MORE »

Who do you love?

by Daniel Cubias • 10/18/08 • Why Latinos love Barack Obama.

In an earlier post, I talked about Barack Obama’s apparently insurmountable lead among Hispanic voters. This is a bitter pill for Republicans, who have eyed this key constituency the same way Homer Simpson drools over doughnuts.

An open "Liddy" letter to Michele Bachmann

“Defending the McCain campaign’s automated phone calls attacking Barack Obama’s judgment and character, Rep. Michele Bachmann [R-MN] on Friday said Obama ‘may have anti-American views’ and called for a news media ‘exposé’ of the views of members of Congress.”(1) MORE »

News you can use

Choose your school

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child. Weekend What's What 1/8-1/11: Hunt and gather

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we’ll be using throughout January, if not February). MORE »
