December deadlines for Central American TPS renewal
Hondurans, Nicaraguans and Salvadorans now in the United States on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) visas must renew these visas by December deadlines or lose legal status. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) announced this month that it will extend TPS to July 5, 2010 for Nicaraguans and Hondurans and to September 9, 2010 for Salvadorans. MORE »
Don’t Forget the Curtido

The pupusa, for those of you who don’t know, is more or less a tortilla stuffed with meat, cheese, and/or beans that is then fried. There are numerous variations.

Uncle #1
by Daniel Cubias, August 6, 2008 • I’m continuing with profiles of my family (Hispanics, one and all) by moving on to my mother’s brother, henceforth known as Uncle #1.
It’s important to note that I never met Uncle #1. He died almost thirty years ago, while he was still a young man.
He was a teacher in my family’s homeland of El Salvador. Uncle #1 was married with three kids (Cousins #2, #4, #6 – whom I will write about in future posts), and he existed comfortably in a war-torn land – an anomaly of course.
