by Chris Steller, Minnesota Independent • September 4, 2008 • An unadulterated press release:

ARLINGTON, Virginia, Sept. 3 — U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today announced that Mrs. Cindy McCain will attend the Tribute to Cindy McCain “One Heart One World” Luncheon Thursday, September 4th.

The noon-hour event took place at the downtown Minneapolis Hilton Hotel.

Protest politics at the RNC

by Harry Boyte, 9/3/08 • More and more of us live in gated communities, not only of neighborhoods, but of belief.

This sense of alienation and distance was fully on display among the demonstrators at the Republican national convention this week in St. Paul. Protestors voiced outrage at the war in Iraq, fury at the Bush administration, and anger at Republicans. Some demonstrators attacked delegates. But what struck me most was the sense of powerlessness.

Republicans shamelessly curry the Stray Cat vote

by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • September 4, 2008 • In what may be a little-noticed ploy to flatter local rockabillies, the last song played before John McCain’s speech at the Republican National Convention was “Rock This Town,” a 1981 hit for the Stray Cats—a band fronted by transplanted Gopher Stater Brian Setzer.

Mayor Interrupted: My weekend non-meeting of the minds with Chris Coleman

by Rich Broderick • September 1, 2008 • The conversation started off on a positive note. More than positive. I shook the Mayor’s hand and commended the St. Paul Police Department for its low profile during the weekend’s worth of patently unconstitutional raids around St. Paul and Minneapolis.

“I know John Harrington slightly,” I pointed out, “and he doesn’t seem to be the kind of law enforcement official who engages in breaking the law.”

Rock-Tenn Public Meetings: September 6 and 15

Opportunities for citizen input on final recommendations for Rock-Tenn are coming up fast. The public comment period ends September 19 for written comments, with meetings held before then on Saturday, September 6 and Monda, September 15.

In addition to recommending biogas as the first choice for fuel, the Rock-Tenn Community Advisory Panel (RCAP) recommended a goal of zero waste for St. Paul, rejected any use of refused-derived fuel (RDF), and urged that the state change laws so that RDF cannot be classified as a renewable fuel. Copies of both the St. Paul Port Authority report (released August 25) and the RCAP summary and findings can be found at the RCAP Web site. MORE »
